New West Michigan Winery Sets Grand Opening
A new place to enjoy West Michigan-made wine has is opening up soon!
After a few delays, Fox and Hen Winery in Grand Haven has announced its grand opening.
West Michigan natives, the owners moved to Grand Haven in 2013, purchasing a house with 6.5 acres of sandy, gravely soil on the outskirts of town, in the heart of blueberry country. Fox and Hen Vineyards is located at 13373 104th Ave., less than one mile from Bass Recreational Area.
They say between 2014 and 2015 they planted 5 different grape varieties and have spent the time since then learning and perfecting their craft.
Approval for the winery at the township and state level began in 2021 and construction started in 2022.
As far as the name, the owners say,
The Fox and Hen symbolize the woods and the farm, which is what our area of Grand Haven looks like. Although the Fox and Hen are natural enemies, wine brings them both together, where they can put their differences aside and share a common interest.
In terms of wine, they say they focus on styles that truly showcase the grapes grown right here in West Michigan. You'll find bright and fruity whites, crisp and refreshing roses, and bold and expressive reds.
Now that all permits have been approved and the business has its liquor license, the owners shared an update to Facebook,
It’s official! We are a fully licensed winery and tasting room! Our opening on Saturday September 30, 2023 is confirmed! We look forward to seeing you then or any Friday or Saturday for the rest of this year (11am-8pm, barring some holidays). We plan to expand our business hours by next spring.
We will have wine, cider, soft drinks, charcuterie, snack flights, and craft chocolate flights.
What a journey it’s been to get here. Our first grapes were planted 10 years ago and we began the legal process of opening a winery nearly 3 years ago. Since then we navigated an unfathomable amount of paperwork, applications, permits, and inspections...oh the inspections! Between the township, the building inspectors, the health department, Michigan Department of Rural and Agricultural Development, The Ottawa County Health Department, Ottawa County Road Commission, The Robinson Township Fire Department, Michigan Liquor Control Commission, I am counting 20 different inspections, but I am likely forgetting some. But we made it!
