Harmful Levels of Arsenic Found in Whole Foods Bottled Water
Personally speaking, I stopped drinking bottled water quite some time ago. It just never made sense to me, why pay for bottled water when you can get it for free at home and just about everywhere else. Now I'm really happy I made that choice.
According to consumerreports.org, bottled water manufactured by Whole Foods and sold in most of its U.S. stores contains potentially harmful levels of arsenic.
Consumer Reports tested dozens of bottled water brands and found that Starkey Spring Water, introduced by Whole Foods in 2015, had concerning levels if arsenic.
Federal regulations require manufacturers to limit the amount of arsenic, a potentially dangerous heavy metal, in bottled water to 10 ppb.
CR also said even small amounts of heavy metal over extended periods increase the risk of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers and lower IQ scores in children.
The strategic director of health and food at the Natural Resources Defense Council said,
I think the average consumer would be stunned to learn that they're paying a lot of extra money for bottled water, thinking that it's significantly safer than tap water, and unknowingly getting potentially dangerous levels of arsenic.
Wow, after reading all of the above information, I have a funny feeling that most people will opt out of bottled water for the time being or altogether and just drink tap water!
The Environmental Protection Agency, which regulates municipal water in the United States, allows states to set their own standards for tap water, as long as they're at least as strict as the federal level. Here's more from consumerreports.org.
