When I think of movies made in Michigan, the first one that pops into my mind is 1980's Somewhere in Time, starring Christopher Reeve, Jane Seymour, and Christopher Plummer and filmed on location at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. If you've never seen it, make an effort. It's an amazing story and what makes it so unique, is that without Michigan as a backdrop, it wouldn't have the same impact.

My parents were so taken with Somewhere in Time, that we took a trip to the island and visited the film's various shooting locations. This type of tourism isn't unique.

Why Hollywood Doesn't Film in Michigan Anymore

Michigan was once a destination for Hollywood, offering attractive filming tax incentives that were wiped out in 2015. Before that, movies like Gran Torino, Transformers: Age of Extinction, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Eminem's 8-Mile were all shot in the Mitten.
