When does Your Year Really Start?

I have a question for you;  does your year, the time you look back at the year prior and forward to the year to come, begin on new years or your birthday.  I always look back and ahead on my birthday but my birthday is right around new years, so is it because my birthday is around new years or does everyone think about those things on their birthday?
