"Bite the Cake!" is the chant heard 'round our house at midnight New Years Eve.  I can't even tell you how long that odd tradition has been around but, I do know how it started.  The kids were little and I decided that we needed a cake that was frosted in what I felt was the color of the coming year.  This was way before I knew about the Pantone color of the year, but I must say I have been pretty accurate :)

Anyway, we forgot to have the cake so someone brought it out on the porch as we were banging on pots and pans to welcome the new year.  Since we didn't have plates and forks, someone just stuck there face in the cake and passed it around for everyone else to have a bite.  It may seem odd, but it is definately a tradition that has stuck around and moved on to younger generations.
