The ‘Burning Bed’ Woman Dies
Her name was Francine Hughes Wilson, and 40 years ago Francine walked into the Ingham County Sheriffs office and told officers that she had just killed her husband by setting their bed on fire. This after she suffered through 12 years of physical abuse by her then husband Mickey Hughes. A jury found Francine not guilty by reason of insanity.
This event that happened in Dansville was the inspiration for the best selling book 'The Burning Bed' and also was made into a TV movie starring Farah Fawcett .
Francine Hughes Wilson had remarried and was living in Alabama where she died after a bout of pneumonia at the age of 69.
The 'Burning Bed', was a turning point in the fight against domestic abuse.
