A member of one of Michigan's preeminent personal injury law firms will now sit on the bench of the state's highest court.

Richard Bernstein, of The Sam Bernstein Law Firm, was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court on Tuesday. He garnered about 1.3 million votes en route to victory.

Best known for his years of work at the Farmington Hills-based law firm his father founded, Bernstein also is an adjunct professor at the University of Michigan and previously served on the Wayne State University Board of Governors for an eight-year term, two as vice chair and another two as chair. He opted against seeking re-election in 2010.

Bernstein has been legally blind since birth, and he campaigned on the slogan of "a blind justice for all."

He has filed several high-profile lawsuits as an attorney alleging violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act against: the University of Michigan, regarding Michigan Stadium  in Ann Arbor; and New York City and its transportation department, after he was struck by a cyclist in Central Park in 2012.

Bernstein joined incumbent Supreme Court justices David Viviano and Brian Zahra as winners in the 2014 election.
