Ever been here? The Sanilac Petroglyphs Historic State Park near Cass City here in Michigan? You should go.

These petroglyphs are carvings made up to 1,000 years ago by Native Americans...the ONLY known (or should we say, 'found') carvings to be made by Native Americans in Michigan. These carvings were discovered in 1881 in the aftermath of the infamous Michigan Thumb Fire of September 5, 1881, when a raging fire killed 282 people and destroyed over one million acres of Michigan land. The fire revealed these hidden carvings that were shielded from view by trees, weeds, bushes and other types of foliage.

These images are carved into a large rock 40 feet by 15 feet wide; hunters and animals being the majority of images.

Deemed prehistoric - the only ones in our state, the petroglyphs can be viewed by the public, only by calling the Sanilac Petroglyphs State Historic Park to get access approved; the images are eroding with time and visitations have purposely been limited.Go while you still can! The address is: 8251 Germania Rd, Cass City, Michigan.

Check out the photos below and then add the petroglyphs to your next Michigan roadtrip itinerary...
