Try a calm New Year's Eve on Mackinac Island. Only about 450 people live year round on the island. A handful
of hotels and three downtown restaurants are open for Dec. 31 celebrations. Restaurants include the Huron Street Pub, the Mustang Lounge and Cawthorne's Village Inn. The dinners are fabulous and the chefs really go all out. There also will be a little music and a little dancing. Like the crystal ball in New York's Times Square, a large turtle wrapped in lights descends slowly to mark the year's transition.
