If a childs backpack is considered “girly” would you let your son carry it?

In North Carolina  a 9 year old boy has been told by the school, he can no longer carry his My Little Pony Backpack, the school says it triggers bullies.  Apparently  kids were beating him up and calling him names, because of the My LIttle Pony Backpack.  Some say the 9 year old boy is being punished by the school for not being allowed to use his favorite backpack and they feel the bullies should be punished.   Tough call as a parent, how should this be handled?
