Joel Heeringa said it was the crawler that worked.

The St. Joseph resident landed an enormous sunfish and ended up setting a new state record.   The hybrid fish, caught back on July 9th in Grand Mere State park weighed 1.8 pounds  and it measured 11.7 inches which set the new state record.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources verified the record fish, ( which took a bit longer than normal since the fish was a hybrid).  But the record stands.

Heeringa caught it still fishing, which is a type of angling with a line and bair resting still in the water.
