Deer hunting officially opens this Sunday and thousands of deer hunters will be on the lookout for that perfect trophy for their man caves.

Let's take a look by the numbers, 614.000 estimated deer hunters in Michigan during 2014.  329,000 deer were killed.  41 percent of deer hunters bagged a deer in 2014.

Here in Michigan it's easy to look for deer in all the wrong places.  600,000 hunters will take to the woods and fields statewide between Sunday and Nov. 30.  Hunters are not always where the deer are.

While many hunters head north to hunt, deer herds are larger and the animals are bigger downstate, and hunters who hunt in the southeastern Lower Peninsula say they are the most satisfied with their hunting experience.  Hunters also bag more deer in the southern Lower Peninsula.

John Ward is a 15 year old deer hunter who loves to hunt with his grandfather in Eaton Rapids.  The Lansing State Journal has his story.
