It was around midnight of Nov. 22, 1883 when four people were murdered on the Jacob Crouch farm: Jacob, his daughter Eunice (and her unborn child), her husband Henry White and a friend, Moses Polley. Ever since then, Eunice's spirit rises from her grave in St. John's Cemetery every November 22 and meets up with Jacob in the wee dark hours at his gravesite in Reynolds Cemetery, Spring Arbor Township.

To this day, thrill-seekers claim to have seen the spirits of Jacob and Eunice together in the cemetery and the faint sound of crying has been heard. Others say they've seen a ghostly mist float over the gravestones until it reaches the marker of Jacob, where it seems to disappear into the plot.

No one was ever convicted of the crime...and Jacob and Eunice will never rest in peace until the crime is solved.

Suspects that were cleared of any charges include Jacob's son Judd, son-in-law Daniel Holcomb, farmhand George Bolles and servant Julia Reese (around midnight, Bolles heard what sounded like a scuffle, a beating and a scream and hid until morning, when he found the bodies). Friends and family members connected to the murder case died under strange and mysterious circumstances as well, before the local constables decided to wrap up the case and mark it 'unsolved.'

It's believed by many that son Judd instigated the murders, fearful that his sister Eunice was to be sole inheritor of Jacob's farm and fortune...others feel Holcomb was an accomplice.

The cemetery is located at the corner of Reynolds & Horton Roads, just southwest of Jackson. But remember:
ALWAYS GET PERMISSION TO ENTER LOCKED CEMETERIES TO PROTECT YOURSELF. MANY SELF-CALLED “GHOSTHUNTERS” HAVE BEEN APPREHENDED THAT DID NOT GET PERMISSION.
