One of the eeriest things to hear at night is the howls, whines and cries of coyotes in the distance...and one of the saddest is the sound of a rabbit that got captured by a coyote.

But it seems that hearing coyotes has gone a step further, and coyote sightings are recurring more often. Coyotes are known to enter neighborhoods, invade your property and if your pets are left outside, they could be devoured by the coyotes. Some residents have lost pets to the hungry coyotes.

I've heard coyotes in the distance and admit, I enjoy hearing 'em...but I do not want 'em in my yard. My neighbors have seen coyotes in their backyards and it's possible they've been in mine as well.

I remember driving home after midnight one night, taking a back country road. I came across two dark coyotes gobbling down a hunk of road kill and they refused to move when my vehicle approached.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is attempting to make people aware of the coyote's voracious appetite and offering advice on how to deter them.

BUILD A FENCE
PUT AWAY TRASH BINS
DON'T LEAVE PET FOOD OUTSIDE

They also claim that if you confront a coyote, try chasing it off your land or start clapping as hard as you can...this supposedly scares them off. I'd like to try THAT for myself.
