Backpack Giveaway For Local Kids in Need

Hundreds of local kids will have just what they need to start school this year, thanks to the Mid-Michigan community.  Local unions collected donations at its annual backpack giveaway at UAW Local 652.  It allowed kids to pick out a backpack and fill it with everything from pens and pencils to notebooks.

Organizers say the need is even greater this year.  What they've done is try to catch them on sale, they've gotten donations from a lot of organizations throughout the community to help them with the rising cost.

More than 500 backpacks were handed out this week.  Organizers say they add about a 100 more backpacks every year since the program has started.
