It's true, back to school spending has grown 55 percent over the past 10 years.  The average spending per student for the 2016-2017 school year was $630, including clothing, electronics and basic supplies.

Here are several ways to save, or get more for your money.

1.  Reuse as many things as possible.  Go through and gather supplies that are still useful, then make a list of what you have and what you need.

2.  Start shopping now.  You can cherry pick the best deals as they show up in stores.  You may have to do some planning and driving around to different stores and sites for the best sales.

3.  Look at resale options.  According to momseveryday.com, don't forget about second hand stores and garage sales.
